DAY RETURN

11th October  Whitwell and Reepham Railway

Whitwell and Reepham was a station on the M&GN's branch from Melton Constable – Norwich City. Although the line closed to passengers on 28th February 1959 the station saw freight trains up until 1983, when the line finally closed. The station was bought in 2007 by a Mike Urry, and the progress made since then has been pronominal, reopening to the public exactly 50 years later (on 28th February 2009). (It is worth looking at (Dad) Peter's page(s) on Whitwell 12 years ago to see how much the site has changed www.peterboggis.co.uk/Cycle-ride1a.htm.) This was the first time that I'd visited Reepham on a steam day (usually on the first weekend of the month), and was made to feel very welcome, thanks to Mick, Alan and Jim. For more information on Whitwell, visit their website www.whitwellstation.com.

11th July and 9th August  9466 visits the Mid-Norfolk Railway

Great Western Railway designed pannier 9466 is visiting the Mid-Norfolk Railway for the fourth consecutive season. Since I've never got round to photographing the loco on the line before now, my visit was well overdue.

27th June–4th July  Railways of Scotland

During my holiday to Scotland I got the chance to visit two of the country's railways. The first on Saturday 27th June was the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway. Operated by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, the railway is also home to some notable locomotives associated with Scotland, Caledonian Railway 439 Class No. 55189, J36 65243 Maude, D34 256 Glen Douglas. However the jewel in the crown is D49 246 Morayshire (which unlike the previously mentioned locos is 'in service', but unfortunately not during my visit).

My second visit (on Tuesday 29th June) was to the West Highland Line. This gave me the chance to travel on The Jacobite, 42 miles from Fort William to Mallaig behind steam through some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery. Motive power for the week was to be LMS Black 5 45231 Sherwood Forester. (I was secretly hoping for K1 62005!) Included below is a short movie of The Jacobite that I have taken with my Canon Ixus 100.

25th April  N7 69621 visits the Mid Norfolk Railway

For a six week period starting at the beginning of April, N7 69621 (usually based at the North Norfolk Railway) went wandering. First port of call was Barrow Hill Roundhouse for their LNER Gala, and then the Great Central Railway for the line's tank engine gala over easter. On it's way back to Norfolk it stopped off for two weekends at the Mid Norfolk Railway and became the first Great Eastern designed loco to work the former Wymondham – Wells line since the early 1960s.
