5th October Members' Day – Wandering 1500 50th Anniversary | |||
This year's Members' Day coincided with the 50th Anniversary of the M&GN Society's legendary 'Wandering 1500' rail tour. On the 5th October 1963, the Society's recently purchased B12 left Broad Street (London) hauling a train packed with enthusiasts 260 miles through middle England. 50 years on, the B12 hauled a main line rail tour once again, be it all, on the last leg of its journey from Sheringham to Holt. (The tour had been hauled to Sheringham from Kings Cross by Britannia 70013 Oliver Cromwell.) Present on the footplate of 8572 throughout the day was David Butcher, who fired the B12 on the tour in 1963, and was one many guests of honour present on this historic day. |

29th August–1st September Steam Gala | |||
The long awaited Gala appearance of BR Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell packed the trains and lineside, as the former Norwich 'Brit' once again graced the rails of East Anglia. BR's end of steam celebrity was due to be joined by 777 Sir Lamiel and 60163 Tornado, but both were forced to withdraw days and hours before the event got underway! This didn't diminish the mood, which still saw six steam locos and one diesel (Class 37 D6732) in service. GNR N2 1744 was drafted in from the GCR as a replacement for the failed Lamiel. The remaining four steam locos were: GWR 56xx 5619; LMS Black 5 45337; LNER B12 8572; BR Standard 4 76084. |

Back in 2002 the M&GN Society completed the overhaul of their sole surviving J15 and in so doing fulfilled their long held ambition to have both it and their B12 in service simultaneously. 11 years on, 7564 is coming to the end (it really is this time!) of its current period of operation with the expiry of its boiler ticket at the beginning of May. So with a cleaning weekend to spruce up B12 8572 the opportunity was taken to line-up the Great Eastern duo in the evening sunshine. A sight to behold – both in 1930s condition and liveries. It was very reminiscent of when they were lined up back in 2007 (with N7 69621) for the ultimate GE steam dream, be it all back then in BR liveries. (Click here to see the pictures.) |
