2nd–4th September Steam Gala
The star of this year's Steam Gala was undoubtedly visiting Ivatt 4MT 43106 (of which I've written much about below, so I wont cover old ground). The loco certainly pulled in the crowds, both on the trains and lineside. An intensive service was once again operated over all three days, with both passenger and goods trains. Other visitors included Black 5 45305 from the GCR. The loco was originally planned to attend last year's event, but the overhaul wasn't completed in time. It made up for lost time this year! The final visitor, drafted in at last minute, was J94 (look-a-like) 68030 owned by the Churnet Valley Railway. These were joined by the 'home fleet' (as I'll refer to them) of: GWR 56xx 5619, 57xx L99; LNER J15 65462 (making its last gala appearance before overhaul); BR 9F 92203 Black Prince. |

22nd August The Return 'Home' of Ivatt 4MT 43106
In 1951 the former M&GN took delivery of their first brand new locos since the majority of the line was first constructed in the 1880s. With all the 'mod cons': outside Walshaerts valve gear, rocking grates, hopper ash pans and self cleaning smokeboxes, it was little wonder that the Ivatt Class 4 moguls were well liked by those that worked on them. Their stay was only to last eight years, but by the late 50s they had taken over virtually all the work, and became synonymous with the Joint in its final years. 43106 was built a Darlington in 1951 and was delivered new to South Lynn (31D) in April. There was nothing particularly special about this loco, and joined its 50 other class mates working trains over the M&GN. In 1956 43106 was moved away, which may have been its saving grace! It was bought by a group of Severn Valley Railway volunteers in 1968, and moved under its own power to Bridgnorth that August. The engine quickly established itself on the SVR during the line's formative years. The loco returned to the mainline in the 70s and 80s. It was withdrawn in 1988, and spent may years in the overhaul queue before a start was made on the loco in 1999. After an extensive overhaul at Bridgnorth the engine returned to steam in the Summer of 2009 (see the 2009 SVR pages). The SVR kept their promise to send 43106 'home' for its first visit to another preserved railway, for which everyone in Norfolk is eternally grateful! |

12–13th March Spring Steam Gala
Now well established in the North Norfolk Railway calendar, this year's Spring Steam Gala took on a small(ish) engine theme, pleasantly juxtaposing with the big engines seen last September. Highlight was NELPG's Apple Green J72 69023 Joem, which looked superb on the Quads – but then, doesn't everything? Also making it in time for the weekend was London Transport liveried 57xx L99 (7715) from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre. The final guest was 3717 City of Truro, resplendent in its new livery and facing downhill (or east if you'd prefer). As usual, the remaining locos were sourced form the home fleet: GWR 56xx 5619; LNER J15 65462 and Hunslet 16-inch 1982 Ring Haw. |
